Royals lose 13th in a row, break team record

Another grand slam dooms the Royals to their thirteenth straight loss, a franchise record.
Royals manager Buddy Bell kept the clubhouse closed for 30 minutes after the loss.

"When they got the four runs, we can't stop playing," Bell said. "We've got to keep playing. The nature of the game is to keep going. I didn't think the focus was there at the end after they got the four runs. That can't happen. I'm kind of running out of answers."

Royals need to go 43-5 to finish .500, 25-23 to avoid 100 losses, 1-47 to avoid losing all of their remaining games.

Royals lose again

Indians 6, Royals 1.
The game was winding toward a quiet conclusion in the top of the ninth when Bell got ejected for arguing balls and strikes with home-plate umpire Tim Tschida.

It was Bell’s fourth ejection in 63 games.

“I think it was more of a misunderstanding than anything,” he said. “Two long nights for both of us.”

Perhaps we could have the entire Royals team ejected and have the T-Bones put on the blues for a game or two. They'd still get beat but maybe at least the Lemonade Guy would come back to Kauffman Stadium. Royals need to go 43-6 to finish .500, 25-24 to avoid 100 losses, 1-48 to avoid losing all of their remaining games.

Kansas City Royals blow a 7-2 lead in the 9th, give up 11 runs, lose 13-7.
As manager of baseball's worst team, Buddy Bell is forced to watch bad baseball on many nights. But he had never seen anything like he did in the ninth inning, which began with his team holding a 7-2 lead.
Can it get worse? We'll see--Snookums and I have tickets for tonight's debacle--er--game. Royals need to go 43-7 to finish .500, 25-25 to avoid 100 losses, 1-49 to avoid losing all of their remaining games.

Royals put up no fight against the Oakland Athletics.

Kansas City needs to go 43-8 to finish .500, 25-26 to avoid 100 losses, 1-50 to avoid losing all of their remaining games.

On the other hand, Filbert was on the Big Screen and correctly answered the Midwest Airlines trivia question, winning cookies for the entire row, three DVD's, and a CD, so the afternoon did have an upside.

Can it get worse?
"Losing is never easy," Royals catcher John Buck said. "It ruins your day."

The Royals (38-72) own the worst record in the majors and made eight roster moves before the game, but played one of their worst games of the season.

"In the nine games, we're doing everything wrong that we were doing right when we were winning," Royals manager Buddy Bell said.

Royals need to go 43-9 to finish .500, 25-27 to avoid 100 losses, 1-51 to avoid losing all of their remaining games.

NCAA bans "offensive" nicknames from post-season

Florida State to challenge ban.
Starting in February, any school with a nickname or logo considered racially or ethnically "hostile" or "abusive" by the NCAA would be prohibited from using them in postseason events. Mascots will not be allowed to perform at tournament games, and band members and cheerleaders will also be barred from using American Indians on their uniforms beginning in 2008.
The University of North Dakota ("Fighting Sioux") has a problem:
Ralph Engelstad Arena, on the UND campus, will be the host site for the NCAA's West Regional men's hockey tournament in March. The $100 million facility, built as a shrine to UND hockey, has more than4,500 Indian-head logos and references to the nickname.
